Würzburg, Regensburg, and Ingolstadt are the notable cities in the vicinity of Nuremberg. They are part of the regions of Upper Palatinate, Upper Bavaria, and Lower Franconia and showcase the full diversity of Bavaria. Würzburg transports you to another world. With its historic cityscape—which encompasses not only the city center but also the surrounding areas—visitors feel as if they’ve been transported 200 years back in time. Ingolstadt, on the other hand, is all about modern technology and innovation. Known as the “Audi City,” this major city in Upper Bavaria is particularly appealing to night owls, who’ll find a wide variety of clubs and nightclubs. Regensburg, on the other hand, is the “City on the River.” From its very beginnings, the city has been shaped by its location directly on the Danube and continues to benefit from the river to this day. With Bavaria’s largest port, Regensburg remains an internationally significant economic hub, attracting visitors and businesspeople from all over the world.
When it comes to Christmas markets, there’s hardly a better place than Nuremberg. The famous Nuremberg Christkindlesmarkt on the Hauptmarkt is one of the most well-known Christmas markets in the world. Around 180 traditional wooden stalls, the scent of freshly baked Nuremberg gingerbread, authentic grilled sausages, and spiced mulled wine create an atmosphere that instantly gets you in the Christmas spirit. And when the Nuremberg Christkind officially opens the market, the most wonderful time of the year begins for many. Just a few steps away is the Twin Cities Market. Here, you can take a culinary trip around the world—without even needing a passport. International specialties, handmade gifts, and crafts from Nuremberg’s sister cities make this Christmas market a special addition. Perfect for anyone who, in addition to Christmas stollen, would like to try Swedish, Italian, or Ukrainian Christmas treats.
To wrap things up, a visit to the Feuerzangenbowle at the Fleischbrücke is, of course, a must. Here, sugar loaves are doused with rum, flambéed, and slowly dripped into the hot wine—a real spectacle that has at least as many cell phones as mugs of mulled wine flying into the air. The cozy winter atmosphere makes this spot the perfect way to wrap up a successful Christmas party. And just like at every Christmas party, there’s always that one colleague in Nuremberg who insists, “I’ll just have a bratwurst.” Half an hour later, he’s holding a second bratwurst, a piece of gingerbread, a bag of roasted almonds, and a Feuerzangenbowle—after all, you have to thoroughly test the Franconian specialties.
